What is Latent TB?

There are people who breathe the TB Bacteria and are infected but their strong immune system stops the bacteria from growing. In such cases the bacteria is inactive however is still alive in their body.

People with Latent TB infection

  • Are not contagious
  • Cannot spread the bacteria in the air.
  • Do not show TB Symptoms
  • Do not have the TB Disease
  • Show positive reaction to tuberculosis skin test or TB blood test
  • Indicate a normal chest x-ray and a negative sputum smear

Treatment?

People with Latent TB and weak immune systems can develop Active TB at a later stage. Therefore, if exposed to TB bacteria it is still important to get treated at the earlier stage so TB disease can be prevented from development.
