DON’T PRESS THE PANIC BUTTON DURING UNWANTED PREGNANCIES

When you find out that you are pregnant (and you don’t want to be!), it is understandable if you get into a panic mode as the pregnancy is not something you planned for or even wanted in the first place! Even though you cannot change this fact, there’s always something that you can do!

Since panicking does not help the current situation or fix the problem – Take a deep breath, sit down and THINK! A better way to deal with an unwanted pregnancy is to compare all the options that are in front of you. Right?

Talk to your partner and evaluate the options, and in a case where you think you cannot talk to your partner talk to a friend or a family member who can help you in the decision making process.

Here are some of the options of  what you can do when you are in this complex situation:

  • Abortion
Although some cultures may be against Abortion, it is good to remember that it is your body and it is, therefore, your choice about what you are going to do with it. Knowing this and keeping this in your mind will help you to turn a deaf ear when judgmental “aunties” and “uncles” scoff at you.

If you know for sure that you want to abort, then be mentally prepared to walk the road less traveled. Try and get mental health support and chalk out a plan by making crucial decisions like –
  1. The clinic that you will be visiting,
  2. The doctor you will be consulting
  3. Whether you will be opting for medical abortion pill (where you take medication to end the pregnancy) or surgical abortion (where you undergo a minor procedure to remove the pregnancy)

And remember, you do not have to go through this process alone. Find someone you can trust and you can talk to! It’s a difficult decision for sure, so it is important that you think through the process thoroughly.

  • Adoption
If you’re not ready to have a baby, there’s always someone else who might be! So, you can always explore the option of bringing the child to life and then making a choice of giving away the child for adoption. You can either trust the NGOs or other agencies to find the parents for the child or you can yourself get involved in the process and choose the correct home for your child.
  • Parenting The Child
Even though you didn’t want a child at the time of conceiving, it is possible that you undergo a change of your mind, and want to explore motherhood once you find out that you are pregnant. If you’re unmarried and single and find yourself pregnant and still want to explore motherhood, you should go for it! Being a single mom can be a beautiful experience! In any situation, surround yourself with loved ones i.e. reach out to your friends and family.

Bringing a child in the world must bring you happiness, so shield yourself from any possible judgement from the society  you can also seek help from health professionals and get mental health support if needed. , Ask yourself if you can do full justice as a parent and If your heart says “yes”, go ahead and get ready to become a parent!
  1. Consult your obstetrician or gynecologist
A health professional can be the best help when it comes to these matters because of their knowledge, expertise and experience. They will also help you understand the pros and cons with respect to the choices that you have.
  1. Take care of your health in the meantime
Whether you decide to bring the child to life or you chose to abort or explore the option of adoption, it is important that you don’t let stress get the better of you! It is important to take care of both your mental and physical health during the decision making process. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and seeking the right kind of support is essential. It is important to pay attention to your eating habits and sleeping patterns which will enable you to make the right decision. Keep your friends, family and loved ones close to you and also, remember there is no shame in seeking help from the health professionals and counselors if you need to. Discuss with people who you think will help you make a choice that is right and the best, both for you and the unborn child.
